ABIOMED // Surgical Console
At the heart of the matter.
AbioCorTM is the world's first completely self-contained, replacement heart system developed for patients with end-stage heart failure who have no other treatment options. ABIOMED consulted Logic's Product Design and Mechanical Engineering teams to produce a compact surgical console to drive the AbioCor artificial heart and thoracic unit. The surgical console aids surgeons during the implant procedure and then travels with the patient to wirelessly monitor the implanted AbioCor system and help doctors make system adjustments.
Logic's Product Design team travelled extensively to various ORs, ICUs, and recovery rooms to observe bovine implant procedures and thoroughly understand surgical procedures, environmental constraints, and patient and caregiver needs. After distilling their findings into product concepts, Logic's Product Design team then went back into the field with concept models to validate their findings.
The new surgical console, along with other AbioCor technology, provides hope for more than 100,000 patients who could benefit from a replacement heart every year. The design won an Industrial Design Excellence Award in 2002
