This global medical solutions company leveraged Logic PD’s product lifecycle management services to develop the user experience of their connected patient management device. By collaborating closely with the customer and their human factors team, Logic PD was able to update the design to provide a more streamlined user experience that can be used universally across the customer’s footprint.


Having a poor user experience can be an adoption barrier for any product. The customer, a global medical device and solutions company, developed a patient management connected device that collects information from patient’s pacemakers and sends it to their physician. This frees cardiac patients from frequent visits to the doctor. However, patients found that setting up and using the device was not an easy task. When the customer decided to create the next generation product, they turned to Logic PD’s industrial design team to help them create a more intuitive user experience that would work for users globally.


During the Roadmapping Phase, the design team met with the customer’s stakeholders to gather key information about the device including technical requirements, typical user profiles, use environment considerations, use scenarios, as well as manufacturing requirements and constraints. The Logic PD design team also performed a study of competitive and analogous products in both the consumer and medical markets. Through these exercises, the design team was better able to understand the opportunities and expectations of the new design and its end users.

Next, the industrial design team created product configuration study models based on the form factor defined by the customer. The generated concepts retained the two button functionality and blue button color of the existing product to ensure easy adoption of the new version. Also in this phase of design, Logic PD designers began to optimize locations for displays and buttons for ease of use and explored universal iconography using back lights to enhance the communication of interrogation, data transfer, error modes, and completion signals. Collaboration between the customer’s engineering team and the Logic PD design team was critical to ensure that antenna placement and wireless operation were also optimized.

The universality of the product was also a barrier to adoption. The country that the user was located in needed to be identified for proper transmission and connection. Logic PD determined that this could be accomplished by adding switches to the back of the product design. Each country would have its own sequence of the six digits that that would denote the country code. Packaging studies were also created for different countries so Logic PD to ensure that the setup directions were easy to follow anywhere in the world.


The industrial design team provided development support to the customer to ensure that the design intent was carried into final production release. The result was a timeless design that reflected the values of their customers while delivering a quality user experience for patients that was easily adopted worldwide.

The product is now available in 23 countries and is used to help monitor patients and provide a more convenient approach to cardiac care.
